Even security experts need to comply!

GDPR - June Update

Ahead of the GDPR coming into effect a year from now businesses across the UK are looking for clarity and are taking steps towards the process of compliance. Firstcom are no different and this week has had a strong GDPR bias. We attended the GDPR roadshow run by global digital security leader Gemalto to learn more about the Regulation and find out what we need to do.

Gemalto help organisations to control risk, manage security and maintain compliance and the purpose of the roadshow is to tour the country providing practical advice to companies like us to get them compliant. The double decker tour bus has been refitted with the latest security and encryption products. There was also a group of experts on hand to answer any questions. We took full advantage and completed GDPR self-assessment with UK based Data Protection experts DQM GRC. The results of the assessment were quite positive, we are 52% ready and have some solutions in place and a strong foundation to deliver the changes required. We do however have some way to go to be fully compliant by 25th May 2018 and need to action the following:

  • Carry out a full assessment compliance assessment followed by a plan which will mitigate the most risk.
  • Draw together a working group from those parts of Firstcom which the GDPR will affect; marketing, Sales, HR, IT and develop a plan to remedy our remaining actions.
  • Identify where we hold personal data within Firstcom and write a transparent policy for the collection, storage and transmission of this data.
  • Consider the purpose for which we store different kinds of personal data and establish a data retention policy for each.
  • Identify third party processors with regards to the governance of our data and ensure that contacts contain strong data clauses to protect personal information.
  • Write a Data Breach Notification policy and train individuals in what to do in the event of a breach.

As specialists in call encryption we are extremely strong in our approach to information security and data protection and have never suffered a data breach of any kind. But attending the roadshow highlighted to us that no business can be complacent and that we all must implement robust policies and procedures to comply with the regulation and protect our sensitive information.
